beyond the work

On a Personal Level

I’m an ‘80s baby, born the second of four siblings in Detroit, Michigan. Family means everything to me. I’m passionate about art in all its forms—film, music, dance, painting, storytelling—and I love diving deep into an artist’s body of work, whether it’s a director, actor, or painter.

Some quirks about me: I have an odd fascination with numbers, especially 8—something about two circles stuck together just makes sense. Speaking of circles, I love them too. My favorite color? Orange. Favorite vegetable? Anything from the onion family. Favorite food? BBQ ribs—but I could never give up tacos or the occasional Chinese takeout.

I love boxing, coffee, good food, great movies, and laughter. And somehow, I always end up being the designated driver, but above all, my favorite thing in the world is spending time with my wife and kids.

embracing the challenge

On the Craft

I grew up sketching comic book-style art and playing classical piano. Music runs deep in my family—every one of us plays an instrument, and I played five. That foundation in sound shaped the way I approach filmmaking today. To me, sound design and mixing don’t just enhance a film; they bring it to life.

When I applied to art college, I was told I wasn’t good enough and wouldn’t get in. Instead of letting that define me, I took a leap—I enrolled out of state and pursued my dream anyway. In college, I studied visual effects, focusing on green screen keying and compositing. After my first year, I was eager to get into the field, and with the help of my counselor, I landed a job as a news producer in Miami.

But something was missing. I didn’t move to Florida just to go to school and get a job. I wanted to do something bigger. I wanted to apply everything I had learned into one pursuit. One day, I said it out loud:

“I want to be a director. I want to make movies.”

And the next day, I did.

I wrote my first short film and, with the support of friends, family, and sheer determination, I went on to make six shorts and a three-part web series. Three of my films have been screened across the country, and I’ve earned multiple awards for both filmmaking and screenwriting.

This journey means everything to me because I wasn’t the “academically gifted” kid. As a child, I barely read or wrote. In 10th grade, I failed five classes and had to make them up my senior year—attending school during the day and night classes to graduate on time. I refused to be defined by setbacks. I was determined to prove that struggles don’t make you lesser—they shape you.

Looking back, every challenge was worth it. Everything I went through made me the artist I am today. In this industry—and in life—I’ve learned not to take anything personally. There’s no perfect highway to success. The detours, the bumps in the road—they don’t stop you. They shape you.

I aspire to teach and inspire others to embrace the challenges ahead. The reward is always worth the risk. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: everything and everyone you encounter happens for a reason.

Looking forward, there are no boundaries.
